Keeping your “Why” in Sight

With nonstop distractions and endless to-do lists, it's easy to lose sight of the core reasons that drive us—the "why" behind what we do. Understanding your "why" is necessary for creating a clear sense of direction and purpose in life.

Today’s letter invites you to pause, reflect, and dive deeper into the motivations behind your daily actions and long-term goals. Take a moment to engage in this exercise, writing down your thoughts and uncovering the deeper intentions that guide you.

What drives you?

  1. Reflect on Your Daily Actions: Start by considering a typical day in your life. List 3-5 activities that you engage in regularly—whether it’s going to work, exercising, reading, or spending time with loved ones. For each activity, ask yourself: Why do I do this? What is the underlying motivation? Write down your thoughts without overthinking.

  2. Dig Deeper into Your "Why": Once you’ve identified your motivations, dig a layer deeper. For example, if you exercise regularly, you might initially think it’s to stay fit. But why is staying fit important to you? Is it about health, confidence, longevity, or something else? Reflect on these layers and see if you can identify any patterns or core values that emerge.

  3. Identify Your Core Values: After examining your "whys," consider what core values are driving them. Are you motivated by growth, stability, creativity, connection, or freedom? Write down any values that resonate with you and consider how they align with your current actions and choices.

  4. Reassess and Realign: Based on your reflections, are there any areas in your life where your actions aren’t aligned with your true "why"? If so, how might you adjust your approach to bring more alignment between what you do and what truly matters to you? Write down any changes or steps you can take to bring more purpose into your daily life.

  5. Set an Intention: Conclude your journaling session by setting a small intention for the week ahead. It could be as simple as "I will take a mindful pause before making decisions to make sure they align with my core values," or "I will dedicate 10 minutes each day to reflect on my purpose."

When we lose sight of our "why" and live without intention, we drift away from the life we truly want. This simple journaling session is a chance to pause, reflect, and realign to help reset your direction.
